چکیده

The focus of this study was to compare the behavior of different consortiums of aerobic propane-utilizing microorganisms, with respect to both the lag time for growth after exposure to propane, and their ability to transform three chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs): chloroform (CF), cis-dichloroethylene (c-DCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE). Thirty-three slurry microcosms, representing seven combinations of aquifer solids and groundwater were constructed for this study. The lag time required for establishing propane-utilizing consortiums ranged between 24 and 29 days in 6 of the 7 combinations. Kinetic tests were performed with respect to propane utilization and CAH transformation. After CAH exposure, the ability of the microorganisms to metabolize propane was significantly reduced. CF and TCE were transformed more slowly than c-DCE, the average values of the initial transformation rates being equal to 0.10 ± 0.04, 0.09 ± 0.05 and 0.98 ± 0.18 μmol/(L h), respectively. CF caused the greatest reduction in propane uptake rates, whereas c-DCE exhibited an apparently reversible negative effect on propane uptake rates. The estimates of the Monod halfsaturation constants relative to CF, TCE and c-DCE resulted in the 2–3 μmol/L range, but were characterized by a high degree of uncertainty.

Stable carbon isotope fractionation during aerobic biodegradation of chlorinated ethenes.

Stable isotope analysis is recognized as a powerful tool for monitoring, assessing, and validating in-situ bioremediation processes. In this study, kinetic carbon isotope fractionation factors (epsilon) associated with the aerobic biodegradation of vinyl chloride (VC), cis-1,2-dichloroethylene (cDCE), and trichloroethylene (TCE) were examined. Of the three solvents, the largest fractionation ef...

Push-pull tests evaluating in situ aerobic cometabolism of ethylene, propylene, and cis-1,2-dichloroethylene.

In situ aerobic cometabolic transformations of ethylene, propylene, and cis-1,2-dichloroethylene (c-DCE), by microorganisms stimulated on propane, were examined in groundwater contaminated with c-DCE and trichloroethylene (TCE). In situ measurements were performed by conducting field push-pull tests, which consisted of injecting site groundwater amended with a bromide tracer and combinations of...

Natural attenuation of chlorinated solvents at Area 6, Dover Air Force Base: characterization of microbial community structure.

A polyphasic approach based on cultivation and direct recovery of 16S rRNA gene sequences was utilized for microbial characterization of an aquifer contaminated with chlorinated ethenes. This work was conducted in order to support the evaluation of natural attenuation of chlorinated ethenes in groundwater at Area 6 at Dover Air Force Base (Dover, DE). Results from these studies demonstrated the...

Fate and origin of 1,2-dichloropropane in an unconfined shallow aquifer.

A shallow aquifer with different redox zones overlain by intensive agricultural activity was monitored for the occurrence of 1,2-dichloropropane (DCP) to assess the fate and origin of this pollutant. DCP was detected more frequently in groundwater samples collected in aerobic and nitrate-reducing zones than those collected from iron-reducing zones. Simulated DCP concentrations for groundwater e...

Semicontinuous microcosm study of aerobic cometabolism of trichloroethylene using toluene.

A semicontinuous slurry-microcosm method was applied to mimic trichloroethylene (TCE) cometabolic biodegradation field results at the Que-Jen in-situ pilot study. The microcosm study confirmed the process of aerobic cometabolism of TCE using toluene as the primary substrate. Based on the nucleotide sequence of 16S rRNA genes, the toluene-oxidizing bacteria in microcosms were identified, i.e. Ra...
